The Berchtesgadener Land and surroundings
Welcome!
As you already know from introduction, I have been living in Bad Reichenhall more than one year. The town is located on the borders of the Berchtesgaden Alps and the Chiemgau Alps in Berchtesgaden country, southern Bavaria, Germany, the central Europe. The core of "my" Berchtesgaden region consist of the Berchtesgaden National Park with one of the cleanest lake in Europe, the Königssee. The basic informations about the region you can find out on various internet websites (only some of them are in English) or travel guides. |
But here on my web you can find PERSONAL and UNIQUE opinions, experiences, observations and advices of the person, who knows the region very well, what it is like to be here as a visitor. I know which places are the most interesting ones to visit and to see, where to find accommodation that suits your needs, where to rent a bike, where to go swimming, the best spas, what is the best time of year for you depending on your needs. See more my unique offer for spending your exceptional holiday in this "Perle der Alpen". |
Shortly, the Berchtesgaden area as such offers magnificent nature, alpine cultural heritage and hideous nazi history. Why do I like the region so much? Because of: 1. majestic mountains, 2. fascinating valleys, 3. glorious lakes, 4. quiet and wild rivers, 5. animal pastures and huts, 6. traditional towns and villages, 7. historical points of interests, 8. christian places of pilgrimage and churches.
1. It goes without saying that the Berchtesgaden Alps consist of mountains. My most favourite peaks and massifs of the Berchtesgaden area are: the Watzmann mountain (2.713 m/8.901 ft), the Hochkalter mountain (2.607 m /8.553 ft), the Hohes Brett mountain (2.340 m/7.680 ft), the Stadelhorn mountain (2.286 m/7.500 ft), the Untersberg massif (1.973 m/6.473 ft), the Jenner mountain (1.874 m/6.147 ft) and the Predigtstuhl mountain (1.613 m/5.291 ft).
2. Where the mountains are located, there we find the fascinating valleys too. The Wimbach valley (Wimbachtal) and the Klausbach valley (Klausbachtal) are my the most lovely valleys in the Berchtesgaden Alps. On the both sides of the Wimbach valley rise steep mountains - namely the Watzmann mountain and the Hochkalter mountain. The Klausbach valley is located near the lake Hintersee and offers excellent views of the "Dolomites of Ramsau", which are part of the Reiteralpe.
3. Everywhere in the Berchtesgaden Land you can find glorious lakes: for example - in the middle of the high mountains (the lake Königssee, the lake Obersee, the lake Hintersee) or on the foothills (the lake Höglwörther See). Some of them are bathing lakes (the lake Thumsee), some of them are very cold (the lake Taubensee). If you want, you can ride your bicycle around the lake Saalachsee. The lake Listsee offers large numbers of fish seen through the clear waters.
4. The glacial/mountain streams and rivers are the natural part of the Alps. The Berchtesgaden Alps - bordered from one side by the Saalach river and from the second one by the Salzach river - are the same. In the region you can find many gorges. My most favourite are the Almbachklamm gorge located near Marktschellenberg and the Wimbachklamm gorge situated near Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden. |
5. The traditional animal pastures and huts are inseparable part of the Berchtesgadener Land, nevertheless it is worth to say that in the past, alpine pastures were used to a much more larger extend than today. Some of them are reacheable by car, some of them by cable car, some of them on the bike, some of them only by walking. My most favourite animal pastures and mountain huts are: Schneibsteinhaus, Litzlalm, Carl von Stahl Haus, Kührointhütte, Hirschkaser and Gotzenalm.
6. I like the nature of the Berchtesgaden Alps. But I like the traditional towns and villages too. I have been living in Bad Reichenhall, but I can imagine - without any problems - that I live in market town of Berchtesgaden, Schönau am Königssee, Marktschellenberg, Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden or Bischofswiesen. Each of the towns offer a combination of the historic buildings and the magnificent nature. |
7. historical points of interests (The Eagle's Nest, Dokumentation Obersalzberg, Royal Palace, Alte Saline, Gradierwerk, Predigtstuhlbahn etc.)
8. places of pilgrimage

If it is not enough for you, remember, that the Berchtesgaden region is very well located. It's north-western part make up marvelous foothill of the Berchtesgaden and the Chiemgau Alps with so called Bavarian See, the lake Chiemsee. The world famous city of Salzburg is situated the north-east of and is reachable only a few minutes by car, bus or train. Further to the east, there is the Salzkammergut area, the austrian region of many marvelous lakes such as Wolfgangsee, Attersee, Traunsee, Mondsee or Hallstätter See. |
On the west of the Berchtesgaden land you find Tirol state, the well-known austrian ski region with for example town of Kitzbühel, the Hahnenkamm mountain and the Pillersee Valley. In the austrian side near of the Berchtesgaden Alps are located notable towns of Zell am See, Kaprun and Maria Alm. The last but not least, very close to the Berchtesgaden Alps is situated mountain-bike (MTB) and ski region Saalbach-Hinterglemm. |
